Twin peacocks fan out on either side of Lakshmi in the central pendant, and the same peacock plume repeats down both sides of the collar in deep-relief casting. Ruby and emerald kemp stones punctuate the scrollwork. What makes this one feel heavier than its price is the fringe: fluted gold melon beads alternating with drops all the way around the pendant. Is this real gold?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. This is imitation jewellery - a Zamak zinc-alloy body, precision-cast and antique gold-plated, with the stones hand-set. Made to look like the real thing at a fraction of the price. It carries no hallmark and is not sold as precious metal.

Will the colour come off?

Not with reasonable care. The finish lasts longest if you put the necklace on last - after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser - take it off before bathing, swimming or sleeping, and keep it in a dry pouch away from other metal.

Why the peacock

The peacock is the vehicle of Lord Murugan and one of the most loved figures in South Indian temple art, a sign of grace and of the rains that bring a new season. On this collar the plumes are cast in deep relief, so they hold a shadow and read clearly from across a hall, with ruby and emerald kemp stones set into the scrollwork.

What to wear it with

Let the necklace be the centre of the look: a silk saree with a plain or lightly worked body, and a blouse that leaves the collarbone clear. The deep-domed jhumkas swing as you move, so a braid or a low bun suits them better than open hair.
